Tom Cruise Is Working With Elon Musk and NASA to Make a Movie In Space

Tom Cruise is in the early stages of development with SpaceX and NASA to become the first actor to star in an action-adventure film shot in outer space.

Reported by Deadline, the film will not be a part of the Mission: Impossible franchise where Cruise has performed a number of high-octane stunts involving gravity, including hanging off a jet plane during takeoff in Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation and more recently hanging out of a helicopter in Mission: Impossible Fallout.

The existence of the project was confirmed by NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine in a tweet which specifies that the project would potentially be filmed at the International Space Station. Situated 250 miles above Earth the space station carries out research and a number of cutting-edge experiments.

The potential issues here lie in the details. If Tom Cruise goes into space you have to expect that he’d have to receive full training to become an astronaut which is no easy feat in itself. Following screenings, medical etc, the actual evaluation process takes approximately 2 years.

Though not too long in film terms, Tom Cruise is 57 years old, albeit seemingly in great shape the task of being space-ready will be daunting – at least on paper. John Glenn is the oldest astronaut to enter space at 77 years old but this was after a stellar career in the military and many years of extensive training for space flight.

With Elon Musk being vocal around his concept of commercializing space flight it will be interesting to see what steps the actor has to take to qualify, and ergo the viability of space flight for the average person.

The exposure for the industry of space will also be important for both NASA and SpaceX. The project overall would be monumental if successful and would cement Mr. Cruise’s name in the history books.
